Nature Based FAQs

The campus is located at Columbia Crest Academy at 24503 State Route 706 E Ashford, WA.

School hours are from 7:30am-2:05pm and late start Wednesdays from 8:30am-2:05pm.

While the program emphasizes outdoor learning experiences, there will be indoor facilities and activities as well.

Yes, students will engage in a curriculum that incorporates both traditional academic subjects and outdoor, nature-based learning experiences. All of the main subjects will be taught and the teachers will be using the currently adopted curriculum that is used district-wide. 

Student learning experiences will align to academic learning standards and the Integrated Environmental and Sustainability K-12 Learning Standards. Outdoor Learning supports the implementation of multiple content areas and standards.

Some of our current curriculum is designed to be hands-on and nature-based, incorporating standards-aligned materials and methodologies approved by state and core standards.

Our program embraces three-dimensional Next Generation Science Standards instruction integrated with Common Core English language arts, math, economics, civics and environmental and sustainability standards. Additionally, our school is adopting the characteristics of a “High Quality Outdoor School”.

Students will typically spend at least one full lesson and up to 2 hours a day outdoors each day, weather permitting. In addition to recess.

The district is implementing initiatives to support low-income families in meeting the necessary guidelines for shoes, clothing and coats through community partnerships and assistance programs.

Teachers are undergoing specialized training in outdoor education, environmental science and other relevant areas to enhance their ability to facilitate successful nature-based learning experiences. The school has contracted with a non-profit organization, Pacific Education Institute to provide in-depth training to teachers.  Additionally, the school has partnered with Outdoor Schools Washington. The organization has ongoing professional development that the staff is participating in and has sent several teachers to a multi-day outdoor schools training program. 

The program incorporates elements of experiential learning, place-based education, and inquiry-based teaching methodologies.

Yes, some out-of-district students may be admitted to the program, subject to availability and district policies.

No, this program will not replace the GRITS Farm program. Students would only be able to attend one program. Columbia Crest offers a GROW program, Growing Real Organic Wonders.

Yes, there is a direct bus that picks up students from the following rally points: 

• Weyerhaeuser Elementary School

• 304th & Mountain Highway

• 304th & Meridian 

• Barney's Corner 

• Eatonville Middle School 

• Yellow Daycare 

• Elbe Store

Yes, students will receive instruction in core academic subjects including math and reading, integrated within the nature-based curriculum.

The other schools teach STEM and have Mystery Science and may offer clubs and other activities for students.

Columbia Crest will be designated as a nature-based school due to the location being within walking distance to the Nisqually River, Sahara Creek and the Tahoma Woods Ranger Station and the National Park Headquarters.  The school location offers unparalleled access to unique areas, allowing students to explore and learn in a rich and dynamic outdoor environment.

Yes, accommodations will be provided to students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), 504 plans, or special needs to ensure inclusivity and support their learning experiences.
